Summary
This article discusses an issue where a node is unable to load the DSE module on startup.
Symptoms
Administrators report an issue on startup of nodes. Based on the startup output, the error indicates that Java was not able to load the DSE module.
Here is an example output from a DSE 5.1.7 node:

Cause
The Cassandra instance in DataStax Enterprise is started with the class com.datastax.bdp.DseModule
. If the shell environment is not setup correctly, the classpath and other environment variables would be missing, leading to the failure to locate required Java classes.
On further investigation, the issue occurs as a result of using the incorrect script to start the services on the node. In the example above, DSE 5.1.7 is a tarball installation and started as follows:
$ cd /path/to/dse-5.1.7/resources/cassandra $ bin/cassandra
Solution
Use the documented commands to startup the DSE instance. For example, the command to start a tarball installation of DSE 5.1.7 is:
$ cd /path/to/dse-5.1.7 $ bin/dse cassandra
